Grief support after the death of a child

The mission of The Compassionate Friends is to assist families in the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child and to provide information to help others be supportive.

The Compassionate Friends - Honolulu Chapter is a part of a national nonprofit, self-help support organization which offers friendship and understanding to families who are grieving the death of a child of any age, from any cause.  There is no religious affiliation. There are no membership fees or dues, and all bereaved family members are welcome.

The secret of TCF's success is simple: As seasoned grievers reach out to the newly bereaved, energy that has been directed inward begins to flow outward and both are helped to heal. The vision of The Compassionate Friends is that everyone who needs us will find us and everyone who finds us will be helped.

TCF - Honolulu Monthly Meetings

The 1st Saturday of each month
Next meeting will be on July 14, 2007
Our meetings will move to the 1st Saturday of the month to take advantage of the availability of the Board Room.

Time: 10-11:30 a.m.

Place: Waikiki Yacht Club 1599 Ala Moana Blvd. Parking is available at Ala Moana Shopping Center

You may come late, leave early. You are not required to talk. Just listening is OK! It takes courage to come to the first meeting-bring a friend or relative to lean on if you wish. You will find that it's all right to laugh or cry, to share exactly how you feel, or to say nothing at all.  You are not alone.

Discovery Channel Needs Your Videotape

Did your child die from a long-term illness? In this situation, many families make a video record of the last few months, weeks, and days as a way of creating lasting memories of the child with the family.

The Discovery Channel will be hosting a new series, as yet unnamed, that allows people to honor a loved one through video footage they have shot. One episode of this new show will focus on grief and grief support. According to co-producer Blake Levin, “We are looking for people that kept video journals, diaries, or even videotaped a loved one leading up to their passing. We are hoping that there are people . . . that used the medium of video to help deal with their own grief. The goal of this new series is to honor a loved one.”

As a public awareness initiative, The Compassionate Friends is assisting Mr. Levin in his search for families that have journaled through videotape the time leading up to death of a child within their family. In return for the successful help of TCF in this endeavor, the organization will be recognized during and at the end of the program.

If you feel that you have videotape that could be used on this program, please e-mail Mr. Levin with your name, where you are located, and a description of the footage. Please write him at YourDocs2007@arp.tv  and cc Wayne Loder, TCF’s public awareness coordinator at wayne@compassionatefriends.org.
